The Alexander Technique is fundamentally different to other therapies in that it’s not strictly speaking a therapy at all. Its therapeutic benefits are well documented but what sets it apart is that it’s truly educational. It essentially shows you how to stop hurting yourself with unconscious patterns of movement, and muscular and mental tension. You can think of it as a self care skill that puts you in the driving seat to actively take responsibility for your own health and well being.

The Alexander Technique is a practical form of embodied mindfulness, and this is something else that sets it apart from most other therapies. At its core is the idea that the body and mind aren’t simply connected, but are part of a functional and indivisible whole. As such the Technique is not just useful for dealing with physical pain or discomfort, but also becoming aware of how you react to situations mentally, helping you to reduce your stress levels whilst maintaining poise and improving posture.

The Alexander Technique is a gentle procedure whereby the teacher, through subtle use of the hands, encourages a release of tension that ultimately becomes habitual, and replaces the damaging habits that have developed over many years. Thus a new freedom of movement and relief from pain can be realised.

It may be described as an exploration of how you respond to movement and situations, and it can be applied to your everyday activities such as walking, sitting, standing, computer work, exercise or sport.

The Alexander Technique has been clinically proven to be helpful for those with back pain via an NHS funded trial performed by Southampton University. The results were published in the British Medical Journal.

Alexander Technique sessions cost £42 for 45 minutes and a taster session is available for those who would like to try before they buy.
