James Adatia – Osteopathy

James Adatia

James Adatia

Osteopathy

I qualified in 1998 from the European School of Osteopathy, one of the UK’s leading osteopathic colleges, with an honours degree in osteopathy. Since then I have been in private practice in East Sussex, and also providing osteopathy through the NHS in West Sussex.

I find working as an osteopath extremely rewarding, helping my patients with my patients for various musculoskeletal problems including back pain, neck pain, shoulder issues, hip problems and trapped nerves.

I also have a special interest in using cranial osteopathy which is a very gentle form of treatment suitable for all ages and particularly babies. Having a family of my own I appreciate the difference having a relaxed baby can make!

If you have any queries about your symptoms and whether treatment might be right for you, please ring for a confidential chat and I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

I am registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC), the statutory body which has been regulating the training and professional activities of all osteopaths in the UK.

What can I expect?

Before any treatment takes place, a thorough clinical examination is performed. This will include a case history where you will be asked about your problem and about your medical history.

For the examination you will be asked to either remove some clothing down to underwear or alternatively bring a pair of loose shorts and vest top. This is so we can make a proper examination of your posture.

Then there is observation of active movements of the body. Because of the body’s structure, pain or stiffness you are experiencing in one part may be linked to a problem elsewhere.

The osteopath will also palpate (examine with touch) your body to feel for tensions and strains.

After the case history and examination, a diagnosis and management plan will be established. In almost all cases, treatment will then follow.

Osteopathic treatment is mainly hands on; using techniques such as massage, muscle energy techniques, stretching, articulation and high velocity thrust techniques to the joints including those of the spine, and gentle balancing techniques. Treatment may also include advice on exercise, work posture, diet or lifestyle to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.

Osteopathic treatment during pregnancy and after birth

Aches and pains are common and can develop as your posture changes the arch in your lumbar spine increases as the baby gets bigger, and your ligaments become more lax. Osteopathic treatment can help your body adapt to these changes and provide relief from pain.

Immediately after giving birth, the new mum must start caring for her baby. It is no surprise that this can be physically a very demanding time with feeding the baby, bending over cots and lifting car seats. All this when your body must adapt again posturally to no longer being pregnant, you have less tone in your supporting abdominal musculature, your ligaments are quite lax and you are trying to recover from giving birth and probably not getting much sleep! Osteopathic treatment can be helpful at this time for aches and pains to correct any imbalances, the effects of which may be amplified by the above unique circumstances.

Cranial osteopathy

Cranial osteopathy is a refined and subtle type of osteopathic treatment that encourages the release of stresses and tensions throughout the body, including the head. It is a gentle approach and may be used in a wide range of conditions for people of all ages, from birth to old age. Cranial osteopaths are trained to feel a very subtle, rhythmical movement called the cranial rhythm. Tension in the body can disrupt this rhythm. Treatment involves gently correcting these imbalances

Testimonials

I was in a great deal of pain in my lower back and leg, to such an extent I was off work, and nothing seemed to be making it better. James had been recommended to me and I decided to give osteopathy a try. I received a quick appointment, James explained everything, was professional and sympathetic, the treatment being to manipulate the areas required. I felt better after the first session and shortly after the second the pains were gone. This was a great result for me and I would recommend him for treatment.

Mrs Hunt

Brighton

I am a reasonably active 84 year old woman. Until a year ago, I walked about 1 mile on most days. Last year I had a bad fall, damaging my left ankle; I was told this would take up to a year to mend properly.

Last September my right knee became extremely swollen and painful and limited my movements considerably. I consulted James.

After one treatment the pain was less and after two, the movement was greatly improved. At 3-4 weekly intervals, the treatment further improved my knee and also the left ankle and at New Year I was able to go to Portugal for a weeks holiday and do a considerable amount of walking. I need to have further sessions every 6 weeks or so but am delighted with the overall result.

I recommend James to anyone suffering the problems of ageing, and the inevitable problems this brings.

E Bendall

Brighton

I had 9 years of almost constant back/sciatic pain following a long labour. I tried lots of different therapies – massage, physiotherapy, acupuncture, pilates, yoga, swimming and was taking a lot of pain killers. During a particularly severe spasm I made an appointment with James. After 4 or 5 sessions my pain suddenly lifted and I have since been completely pain free for 2 months now! I am certain that it is due to James’ treatment that my pain has gone and I feel normal again! For that I am truly and utterly grateful to him. I’ve been DIYing, hoovering (boring!) and swinging my kids around without any problem! So, thank you, thank you, thank you….and why on earth didn’t I come and see him earlier?

Hove

I came to see James Adatia in November, during my work-related visit to Brighton, because I was having pain, particularly in my lower back and left hip, and also in my neck and shoulders. I was very delighted to find a true professional who examined me well and then gave me two osteopathic treatments that gave an instant relief from the pain that I was having. I have had experiences of other osteopaths and chiropractors in other countries – I have travelled extensively and lived abroad because of my work – and I can sincerely say that the treatment I received from James Adatia was of top quality, and the best that I have experienced so far. James Adatia is also a sympathetic person – an extra “bonus” for anyone who works in the field of health care.
